Sandor MATYAS, born in Hungary in 1893, was preparing to leave the country for South Africa in 1939 to avoid reliving the barbarity he had experienced as an officer in the Austro-Hungarian army during the First World War.
On his way to Paris, he bumped into Jacqueline D'Anger d'Orsay on a station platform, whom he had met at dinners in Budapest a few years earlier. Love at first sight made him stay and settle in Paris to start a family of 6 children. War, hardship and turmoil did not stop him from spoiling his wife, whom he loved more than anything. It was in 1943 that he gave this gold and diamond compact from Cartier Paris, and had the Matyas and D'Anger d'Orsay coats of arms fused together as a sign of love.
