Large folio, shagreened basane, gilded greek border, ornate smooth spine, interior roulette, speckled edges (Binding of the period). Louis-François Cassas (1756-1827) travelled to Istria and Dalmatia in 1782 at the request of a group of enthusiasts, including Visconti, to make drawings and surveys of the region's antiquities. The work, written by Joseph Lavallée (1747-1816), is in two parts: the first is a general history of the region, the second an edition of Cassas's travel journal.
Magnificent engraved intaglio illustrations based on drawings by Cassas, including an etched title-frontispiece by Filhol, an allegorical frontispiece by Pillement, Réville and Née, a double-page map of Istria and Dalmatia and 66 out-of-text plates, some folding, executed under the direction of Née.
A very fine copy, elegantly bound in the period, complete with the list of subscribers, which includes the First Consul, Talleyrand, the Piranèse brothers, Quatremère de Quincy, Laborde, Millin, etc.
Stamp with the numeral AA surmounted by a closed crown - close to the mark of King Albert I of Saxony (1828-1902) - on the first flyleaf.
Minor rubbing to binding, spotting and scattered foxing.
