Lot no. 261
CASTROL - motor oils. Wooden oil can transport case with 2 lithographed sheets. Circa 1950-60. Good condition, wear, oxidation, missing parts. 55 x 31 x 40 cm. Castrol was founded in Cheapside (London) by Charles "Cheers" Wakefield, under the name "CC Wakefield Oil & Company". In 1899, Charles left his job at Vacuum Oil to set up a business selling lubricants for trains and industrial machinery. Wakefield's researchers discovered that all they needed to do was add a small amount of vegetable oil extracted from castor beans. In 1909, they named this new product "Castrol". In 1919, John Alcock and Arthur Brown chose Castrol to lubricate their engines on their first transatlantic flight (Source: castrol.com and wikipedia).
