A charming publication in a small number from the collection of the Petits Conteurs du xviiie siècle. It is decorated with a portrait of Caylus engraved by Lalauze after Cochin, a header after Eisen and a facsimile of a letter. It brings together a number of playful texts by the Comte de Caylus, an amused observer of eighteenth-century manners and popular language. ☞ A precious copy from the elegant bibliophile Octave Uzanne, the book's scientific editor, with his ex-libris: he signs the bio-bibliographical note on the comte de Caylus. The volume is enriched by several items: - an interesting autograph letter from Caylus to Abbé Conti (1742). - a suite of 5 figures and a frontispiece engraved on copper by Hanriot after Dubouchet, here in two states in black, one before the letter. This suite was sold separately to illustrate copies of the first edition (here printed on Hollande). - a note by H. Bonhomme on the Caylus letter. - the engraved cover for the suite. Some leaves a little browned.
