[CAYLUS (Anne-Claude de). Recueil d'antiquités égyptiennes, étrusques, grecques et romaines. Paris, Desaint & Saillant, Tilliard, 1761-1767. 7 volumes in-4, marbled calf, triple fillet, spine gilt, gilt edges (period binding). First edition of this monument to Egyptian, Etruscan, Greek, Roman and Gallic archaeology in the 18th century. The first volume comes from the 1761 reprint but "few copies have the first volume dated 1752" (Cohen). The seventh volume is a supplement published by M. de Bombarde based on the manuscripts of the Comte de Caylus two years after his death. The illustrations include 6 allegorical frontispieces, a portrait by Claude Littret, 828 plates of antiquities and numerous vignettes in the text, representing a wide range of monuments and objects, sculptures, pottery, coins, jewellery, tablets, maps, plans, etc. The fifth volume contains the first state and the box on pp. 193-194 and 205-206. From the archaeological library of Dr J.-D. Gleize, with bookplate in Saint-Julia d'Aude. Without the second portrait after Cochin. Some headbands restored, spines cracked and minor binding damage, light wetness at the beginning of the first volume. Brunet, I, 1705 - Cohen, 211.
