CÉLINE (Louis-Ferdinand). Voyage au bout de la nuit. New edition with fifteen drawings by Gen-Paul. Paris, Denoël, 1942. In-8, jansenist anthracite morocco, smooth spine, steel grey suede lining and endpapers, gilt edges on witnesses, cover and spine, chemise and slipcase sheathed in the same morocco (J.-P. Miguet, 1974). First edition illustrated by Gen Paul, with 14 full-page compositions and a vignette on the cover. Céline had quickly conceived the project of publishing an illustrated edition of Le Voyage, initially envisaging the collaboration of the painter Henri Mahé, before entrusting the task to Eugène Paul, known as Gen Paul (1895-1975). But this edition was delayed for a long time: announced prematurely in March 1935 as featuring lithographs by Gen Paul, it was not published until March 1942 with reproductions of pen-and-ink drawings enhanced with Indian ink. One of only 15 copies published on esparto (n°xiv), in addition to the 270 copies on this paper. The fourteen full-page compositions were coloured and signed by Gen Paul. The copy is enhanced by a portrait of Céline in black ink and watercolour signed by Gen Paul, pasted on the title vignette (7 x 6 cm). Autograph signed letter from the artist on the title page: to Patrick. I have coloured all the drawings, dated 1942. A superb copy in Miguet's Jansenist morocco.
