He was a pupil of his uncle Joseph Melling in Strasbourg. He was the architect to the Sultan of Oman Selim III from 1795 to 1803, and later the landscape painter to Empress Josephine. He exhibited at the Salon from 1804 to 1824. In 1809, he set up an engraving workshop to reproduce his drawings. In 1821, the French government sent him to the Pyrenees to demonstrate that their natural beauty could rival that of the Alps. Labarère 1035 - Dendaletche 1268
