Lot no. 241
CÉSAR (Jules). Quæ extant ex emendatione Jos. Scaligeri. Leiden, Officina Elzeviriana, 1635. In-12, red morocco, triple gilt fillet, ornate spine, red morocco lining, inner lace, gilt edges (17th century binding). One of the Elzeviers' most perfect masterpieces. The first small-format edition of Caesar's works published by the Elzeviers in its first and best edition; it was reprinted twice under the same date. The volume features a title-frontispiece, three copper-engraved fold-out maps and six wood-engraved figures in the text. According to Willems, the Caesar of 1635 is "the most perfect of Elzevirian productions, the principal masterpiece of all those that have immortalised the name of the great Dutch typographers [...] The beauty of the design and the quality of the printing are the result of the work of the great Dutch typographers. [...] The beauty of the printing, in new type, the neatness of the edition, the taste that went into the choice of ornaments, the fineness and solidity of the paper, the happy size of the volume, the purity and correctness of the text, all combine to make the Caesar of 1635 one of the most enviable jewels that can adorn a bibliophile's jewellery box". A very fine copy in a fresh red morocco lined binding. Ex-libris with the motto Espérer c'est jouir. Willems, n°420 - Rahir, n°410.
