Lot no. 191
CHABAN-DELMAS Jacques (1915-2000).
2 L. A. S., La Ligerie and Paris, 25 September and 15 November 1946, to General de Gaulle; 1 page in-4 on the letterhead of La Ligerie, and 4 pages small in-8.
Henri de Gaulle bought the Château de la Ligerie in the Dordogne in 1900 as a holiday home. It was sold in 1920 and then bought back in 1940 by the cabinetmaker Maurice Legendre, father-in-law of Jacques Chaban-Delmas.
25 September. Chaban-Delmas talks about La Ligerie and his parents' trip to Lorraine, where they brought products from the estate in Colombey to the General's attention: "The cherry brandy comes from three trees that I am sure you have known". Then, as if on cue, he evokes La Boisserie and the "all-too-familiar memory" he has of it.
15th November. After conducting "an electoral campaign [that he has] endeavoured to maintain at the highest possible level", he defends himself against a rumour, originating in particular from Georges Bidoult, accusing him of having divulged "confidences" that the General had given him "about the M.R.P. and its leaders"... He states: "As for the 'confidences' that you kindly gave me, General, you know that I kept them to myself in accordance with the most elementary correctness"...
