Lot no. 201
Paris, Imprimerie royale, 1753. In-4, grained calf, spine decorated, edges spotted (contemporary binding). First edition of this important account of a voyage to the coast of Acadia. M. Chabert's work," comments Sabin, "received the highest praise from the commission appointed by the Academy of Sciences to examine it, and was given as a model for future navigators. It is divided into two parts: the first contains the account of the author's voyage from Brest to Louisbourg and his four expeditions to the neighbouring islands and coasts, and the second, the astronomical observations he made offshore", which are renowned for their accuracy. The first part of the work is illustrated with 6 fold-out maps engraved by Dheulland which "give this esteemed work great interest for the geography of Canada", according to Chadenat. The second part includes a plate of figures and an out-of-text table. A very fine copy from Philippe-Laurent de Joubert (1729-1792), treasurer of the States of Languedoc and enlightened art lover, with his fine engraved bookplate. A founding member of the Société des Beaux-Arts de Montpellier, he was the city's greatest patron and collector of art. Skilful and discreet restorations to the binding; some foxing. Sabin, n°11723 - Leclerc, n°691 - Chadenat, n°1065 - Staton, n°222.
