Saint Peter the Apostle, the first Pope, a martyr of Nero’s empire somewhere between 64 and 67AD. Ever since the earliest depictions of the saint he has always been portrayed as a mature man, perhaps the oldest of the apostles, with a rounded, grey beard and circular hair. In this case he is depicted with pontifical ornaments and a mitre on his head. Images in which he is dressed in this way and seated on his throne are known as "Chair of Saint Peter".
