LOUIS XVI PERIOD QUEEN'S CHAIR Stamped by Georges Jacob From the Collections of the Duke of Penthièvre at the Château de Châteauneuf-sur-Loire In carved and cream lacquered wood, decorated with pearls and hearts, the tapered legs with grooved flutes, upholstered in water-green silk damask with floral decoration, stamped G.IACOB and the mark of the furniture repository of the Château de Châteauneuf-sur-Loire (C9 under a closed crown on either side of a naval anchor) under the back crossbar. H. 92 cm (36 ¼ in.) l. 53 cm (20 ¾ in.) Georges Jacob, received master in 1765 A Louis XVI cream lacquered chaise a la reine, stamped by George Jacob, coming from the collections of the Duke of Penthievre at Châteauneuf-sur-Loire castle As its mark indicates, this chair was supplied by Georges Jacob for the furnishings of the Château de Châteauneuf-sur-Loire during the reign of the Duke of Penthievre (1725-1793). Louis-Jean-Marie de Bourbon (1775-1793), Duke of Penthièvre, was the grandson of Louis XIV and the son of Louis-Alexandre de Bourbon, legitimate prince and Count of Toulouse. His already considerable fortune was increased by the inheritances of his cousins, sons of the Duc du Maine, who died without issue; his vast estate included numerous residences such as the Hôtel de Toulouse in Paris, the châteaux of Sceaux, Anet, Aumale, Dreux, Blois, Chanteloup, Amboise and Châteauneuf-sur-Loire, for which our sieges were executed. During the Revolution, his property was confiscated, and he retired to his château at Bizy in Normandy, where he died in 1793. As Grand Admiral of France from the age of 12, the Duke was often depicted against a backdrop of naval battle, which explains why he used the anchor to mark the furniture in his collections. To this anchor, he added specific letters for each château: AT for Anet, CP for Chanteloup and C9 for Châteauneuf-sur-Loire. CHATEAUNEUF-SUR-LOIRE Built by Mansart at the end of the 17th century for the Phélippeaux de la Vrillère family, Châteauneuf-sur-Loire was acquired by the Duc de Penthièvre in 1784 from the Rohan-Guéménée family, along with all its furnishings, for the considerable sum of 50,000 livres. As with his other residences, he called on the services of Georges Jacob and Roger Van der Cruse, known as Lacroix. The contents of the château were seized during the Revolution and sent to Tours and then Paris to be sold without reserve. *Information for buyers: The auction is exclusive of VAT.
