Charcoal and oil on canvas USA, 1964 Fernando Botero (b. 1932) - Colombian painter, sculptor, artist and illustrator Signed and dated lower right ‘Botero 64’ Signed, dated and titled ‘Botero. 1964. Naturaleza Muerta’ on the reverse Dimensions: 170 x 175 Framed: 185 x 190 cm Very good condition Provenance: James Goodman Gallery, NY Exhibition: Fernando Botero, Kunsthalle Würth, Schwabisch Hall, 11. November - 17. April 2006 Large scale monochrome still life composition by Colombian painter Fernando Botero; comparable works fetch up to €260,000 on the international auction market Estimate by Auctionata Expert: 120,000 Euro In 1966 Botero held his first exhibition at the gallery Brusberg in Hanover with resounding success. Since then his work became an integral part of the gallery's program. About the still life painting Botero once said in an interview with Ernst Beyerle: "... I have never placed a number of objects in front of me to paint a still life, nor have I ever taken a model to paint a nude. If I want to paint an orange, I prefer to eat that Orange first and then to paint it, instead of painting it in front of me." Condition: The painting is in overall very good condition with hardly noticeable signs of age and wear. The image dimensions are 170 x 175cm, the framed dimensions 185 x 190 cm. Literature: Cf. Brusberg Dokumente 26. Botero – der Maler. Bilder und Zeichnungen aus 30 Jahren, published by Dieter Brusberg for the exhibitions of paintings and drawings by Fernando Botero from 16.03.-11.05.1991, p. 18. Fernando Botero. Exhibition Catalog, Kunsthalle Würth, Schwabisch Hall, 11. November - 17. April 2006, Swiridoff Verlag, Künzelsau, p. 62 (Ill.) Fernando Botero (b. 1932) A native of Medellín, Columbia, Fernando Botero was to be trained as a torero as a child. The first drawings of the twelve-year old issued the bull and the torero. Fernando Botero worked as an illustrator for the magazine Columbiano since 1948. In 1952, he began studying painting at the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando and at the Prado in Madrid. Two years later, he switched to the Accademia di San Marco in Florence, where he created frescoes amongst his other works. Again two years later, he relocated to Mexico City, where he met Rufino Tamayo and José Luis Cuevas and worked as a teacher at the Escuela de Bellas Artes of the National University in Bogotá. Botero decided to move to New York in 1960. In the late 1960s, journeys to Germany and Italy took place, settling in Paris in 1972. Botero belongs to the most important representatives of modernity in Latin American art, identified in the return to the origins. The artist lives in Paris and Pietrasanta, Italy, today.
