Lot no. 172
CHARDIN (Jean). Voyages en Perse et autres lieux de l'Orient. Amsterdam, aux dépens de la Compagnie, 1735. 4 volumes in-4, marbled calf, spine decorated, speckled edges (Binding of the period). The finest and most complete edition of Chardin's voyages (the original of 1686 consisting of a single folio volume), both for the text (the first stops in 1673) and for the engravings (we have 83 plates, including the repeated frontispiece).
Jean Chardin (1643-1713) was a Protestant jeweller who, like his father, practised in the Place Dauphine. For commercial reasons, he made several trips to Persia, a region then little known to Westerners (1665, 1671-1680), with forays into Turkey, the Caucasus and India. Fleeing France in 1681, even before the Edict of Fontainebleau was promulgated, he took refuge in London, where Charles II appointed him Court Jeweler.
From the library of Baron Camille de Warenghien de Flory (1890-1965), with bookplate.
Epidermure on boards, corners worn, small tears on some headpieces.
Wilson, p. 40 - Hage Chahine, 914 - Sale Atabey, 222.
