Size (photograph): 21.5 × 17.5 cm (8 ½ × 6 in.) Size (frame): 32 × 26 cm (12 ½ × 10 ¼ in.) (Moisture stains and small folds) An official portrait of President Charles de Gaulle, photographic print, 1958, dedicated to Paul Reynaud Provenance : - President Paul Reynaud (1878-1966) ; - Then by descent. Historical background: Charles de Gaulle and Paul Reynaud forged a relationship back in 1934, when the young colonel convinced the politician of the modern use of tanks. The General's dedication obviously refers to the dark days of 1940 and Paul Reynaud's attitude during the war. It was Paul Reynaud who invited him to take up the post of Under-Secretary of State for National Defence and War in his government, and it was also Paul Reynaud who sent him on a mission to London. Our photograph was sent at a time when the two men were on the same ideological wavelength (from 1958 onwards). The political break came in 1962, notably with Reynaud's opposition to the election of the President of the Republic by direct universal suffrage proposed by de Gaulle.
