Lot no. 124
Charles GUÉRIN 9 L.A.S., [1900-1901], to his publisher Alfred VALLETTE 13 pages in-8. Most of these letters, written from Paris, Biarritz or Lunéville, concern the publication of Le Semeur de Cendres: dispatch of manuscripts, correction of proofs, quality of paper, on which he is particularly fastidious, etc. Lunéville 14 December 1900: "I will send you my manuscript around 20 January. It will provide 250 pages for printing. I think the volume could be published at the end of March. I have no news of the cover of The Lonely Heart"... - "This printer's catoblepas is going to delay us for several more days. Please look again at the beautiful muddle that stretches from page 55 to page 60"...- Biarritz 5, 10 and 17 May [1901]: he sends more corrections; "if we pin it now, the book will be ready in the first days of next week" and he hopes that the service will not be delayed by Pentecost. - He asked that copies of Le Semeur de Cendres be sent to a number of people, including Henry Bordeaux, Heredia, Stuart Merrill, Paul Fort and Jean Moréas, and he added: "Le Japon du Deuil des Primevères [Francis Jammes] lacks lustre altogether. I wouldn't like to have such an ugly one. Lunéville 23rd December, he sends two short stories by BLASCO IBANEZ to be published in the Mercure and would like to know "if the rather honourable movement for the Semeur indicated by my last accounts has been confirmed since June"; in a postscript he asks to be sent the recent edition of L'Immoraliste. Paris 12 October. He is prepared to take "twelve of the shares that should increase the capital" of the Mercure de France; he asks for information on the review La Vie moderne, which wishes to reproduce his verses in a Calendrier des Poètes nouveaux. Articles from the Mercure de France are attached.
