This luxurious cigar box belongs to the corpus of luxury objects tastefully produced by the famous cabinet-maker and producer of luxury cabinetry Charles Guillaume Diehl. A big name at the World's Fairs in the second half of the 19th century, where he won numerous awards, he made a name for himself with a cosmopolitan and wealthy clientele, thanks to his small pieces of furniture and especially his small rosewood and cedar boxes. In the tradition of his "articles de Paris" and French tabletterie, he created liqueur cellars, jewellery boxes, game boxes and, as shown here, cigar chests that elegantly and modernly combine fruit woods and chased bronze ornaments. He does not hesitate to call on renowned sculptors, such as Emmanuel Frémiet, to create the models for these decorative motifs.
