Provenance: Private collection, Paris
This charming painting has the great merit of presenting two facets of the work of Charles Guilloux, the great master of Symbolist landscape painting in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, on the same card. On the front, we see a seductive view of Paris, painted in a post-impressionist style and bathed in the light of the setting sun in a sparse cameo of subtle mauves. The reverse is more reminiscent of Guilloux's Symbolist aesthetic, with a lyrical full-moon landscape.
