Charles Robert Leslie was born in London of American parents, and after spending a few years in the United States with his family, returned to his native city. On the strength of prestigious recommendations and a very promising talent for painting, he joined the Royal Academy. He rose through the ranks, becoming an associate member in 1821 before being officially named an Academician in 1827. His painting is irremediably imbued with the new Romantic pictorial movement, the first impulses of which originated across the Channel.
Our portrait is an interesting rediscovery in our artist's body of work. It shows Henry Richard Vassall Fox sitting in his library. The latter was one of the most important representatives of the liberal Whig party in England, known in particular for having ardently protested against the conditions of Napoleon Bonaparte's exile.
As proof of the posterity of our model (portrayed by François-Xavier Fabre, among others) and our panel, the latter was engraved for wider distribution (fig. 1). The National Portrait Gallery in London holds an oval portrait of Henry Richard Vassall Fox derived from our painting.
