Marie of Bourgogne's departure for the falcons hunt, oil on canvas, signed and dated, by C. Tilmont

94.5 x 130.0 cm
Provenance: Private Antwerp collection since the first half of the 20th century
The grandmother of Emperor Charles V, Mary of Burgundy died on 27 March 1482, aged 25, following a fall from her horse three weeks earlier while hunting in the forest of Wynendaele. This period of convalescence allowed him to settle his last affairs and pass on his Burgundian inheritance to his son, the future Philip the Handsome. In the scene depicted here, no one is yet aware of the event that is about to unfold, or of the fundamental consequences it will have for European geopolitics at the dawn of the Modern Age. It is all the easier to understand the interest that this episode represents for a painter from the young Belgium, during the Romantic period no less.
