Lot no. 93
Charles William Bartlett (England, 1860-1940)
Print, oban yoko-e, Kyoto. 1916. Signed in the lower left margin Charles W. Barlett and artist's stamp CWB. Publisher of Watanabe Shōzaburō and stamp. (Small holes, corner restored). Size 24.9 x 37.3 cm
Charles W. Barlett left England with his wife in 1913 to travel and pursue his vocation as an artist. On their arrival in Japan in 1915, Barlett met the publisher Watanabe Shozaburo through the artist Fritz Capelari. The publisher published twenty-one prints by Barlett from 1921, some taken from his travels, others inspired by views of Hiroshige. It is to the latter category that this print seems to belong, evoking the famous views of the Nihonbashi from the Tokaido series.
