Lot no. 56
CHARPENTIER (Jean de). Essay on glaciers and erratic terrain in the Rhône basin. Lausanne, Marc Ducloux, 1841. In-8, bound in half-chagrin with corners, spine with 4 raised bands decorated with gilt fillets and gilt title, marbled edges (period binding). First edition, illustrated with a folding map and 7 out-of-text lithographs (of 8: the view of the Pierre de la Poudrière de Sion seen from the east is missing). An interesting work by one of the pioneers of glaciology, the first to formulate the theory of successive ice ages. Although the book was published after Agassiz's work on glaciers, it is based on earlier studies that Agassiz himself drew on. Ex-libris Peter Obergfell pasted on the back cover.
The author was director of mines in the canton of Vaud and honorary professor of geology at the Académie de Lausanne.
