Genève ; Paris, Prault, 1788 ; 2 parts in one vol. in-8 of [4]-118-[2] pp. ; [2]-148-[3] pp. in contemporary binding of blond calf, gilt roulette on the boards, smooth spine decorated, red parts, yellow edges. Very rare reunion of the two parts first published separately, the first in 1785, the sequel in 1787, of Isabelle de Charrière's famous novel of manners. A Swiss woman of letters of Dutch origin who wrote in French, Isabelle de Charrière held a salon in Neuchâtel. Influenced by Diderot and Rousseau, she was critical of moral conventions and religious orthodoxy.
