In-8 (22,2 x 13,3 cm), red half calf, spine ribbed and decorated with gilt and cold-stamped fillets and motifs, covers preserved ([pastiche binding by Devauchelle]). Rare first edition. Several passages were reworked or deleted in the following edition. Châteaubriand wrote in the warning to the second edition: "In this edition I have followed all the changes that have been indicated to me. No one can give me more pleasure than to warn me when I have made a mistake: someone always has more light and more knowledge than I do" (quoted by Vicaire).
