Lot no. 12
CHATEAUBRIAND (François-René de)
Reunion of 2 autograph letters signed.
- L. A. S. to Eugène François d'Arnauld, baron de Vitrolles. [Paris], 4 January 1823. 3 p. in-12 on bifeuillet of laid paper.
Articles against the new Minister of Foreign Affairs have appeared in the press. He tells his friend, the Baron de Vitrolles: "I have particular reasons for wanting to know quickly whether you would be the author of some articles inserted in the white flag and in the daily newspaper. You know how much I respect the independence of opinions, so I do not pretend to enter into a discussion with you about a principle or a doctrine; I am only taking the liberty of asking you to enlighten me about a fact. I have no other interest in daring to ask you a question that may seem indiscreet than to contribute, as far as possible, to the reparation of an injustice that I have never ceased to lament.
A copy of the Baron de Vitrolles' reply is attached, indicating that he did not write it.
- L. A. S. from his initials to a gentleman. [Paris], 16 February 1824. 2 p. in-12, on bifeuillet of laid paper.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs was very busy, in particular with the bill opposing him to the Minister of Finance Joseph de Villèle. As a result of this opposition, he was ousted "like a lackey" from his ministerial post on 6 June 1824.
"I was doubly annoyed, sir, by your run, firstly because of your health and secondly because I was unable to take advantage of your kindness. I would go myself to thank you and to hear from you if I were not immersed in the work that this unworthy law has done to me. Apart from the Chamber of Peers, the works for L'Advocat [his publisher] and the law of love, I don't know what to do.
