Vincente Manansala est une figure essentielle du mouvement moderniste aux Philippines. Après avoir étudié les Beaux-Arts dans son pays natal, en 1950 il poursuit son enseignement à Paris dans l’atelier de Fernand Léger, auprès du maître en personne. Il développe alors un style qui lui est propre, fondé sur une vision de l’espace et une technique nouvelles. Manansala élabore un « cubisme transparent » en superposant plusieurs fines couches de couleurs translucides. Pour l’artiste, en peinture la vérité émerge du processus de création. C’est avec une grande liberté qu’il joue avec les formes géométriques pour refléter le quotidien de la société philippine et transmettre ses valeurs. Les scènes qu’il choisit de représenter sont porteuses d’un syncrétisme entre les cultures du barrio et de la ville. Le thème de la madone est cher à Manansala comme en témoigne la qualité de cette Femme à l’enfant datée de 1973. Dans un écrin de verdure, baignée d’une lumière tropicale, une jeune femme allaite son enfant. Rien ne vient troubler la quiétude qui enveloppe les deux figures et le chat endormi à leurs pieds. In 1950, after studying fine arts in his motherland, he continued his training in Léger’s atelier in Paris, learning from the master himself. He created his own style based on a personal vision of space and a new technique. Manansala developed “transparent cubism” by superimposing several thin layers of translucent colors. According to the artist, the truth lies in the creative process. He freely articulates geometrical forms to depict the Filipino way of life and values. The scenes he choses to represent merge the city cultures with the more traditional barrio lifestyle. As told by the quality of Woman with Child painted in 1973, the Madonna was one of Manansala’s favorite subjects. In a lush greenery background, bathed in tropical light, a woman is breastfeeding her child. Nothing disturbs the tranquility that surrounds the two figures and the cat sleeping at their feet. In this oil on canvas, Manansala pays tribute to the beauty of a gesture both essential and universal. A religious calm emanates from this timeless scene. Full of gentleness and simplicity, the work crystallizes a dreamlike reality.
