The murder of two German Catholic missionaries in 1897 led to a landing of German infantry troops in what had previously been a commercial port of call for the German fleet. A lease was granted to the German Navy, which set up its Far East squadron there. The concession grew rapidly; a station linked up with the Trans-Siberian Railway in 1904 (13 days from Berlin) and the port saw its number of ships rise to over 500 in 1909. In 1914, on 7 November, the troops were forced to surrender to the Imperial Japanese Army. This marked the end of the German concession, of which all that remains is the memory of Tsingtao beer (the former name of Qingdao). * Following Council Directive (EU) 2022/542 of April 5, 2022, implemented in national law from 01/01/2025, buyers from within the EU have to pay 5.5% VAT on the hammer price of this lot. * Following Council Directive (EU) 2022/542 of April 5, 2022, implemented in national law from 01/01/2025, buyers from within the EU have to pay 5.5% VAT on the hammer price of this lot.
