The book contains the biographies and imaginary portraits of 40 remarkable heroes and heroines from the Han dynasty to the Song dynasty, all accompanied by a brief introduction and guided by a poem in the yuefu style. The book's illustrations were widely distributed and reused, often as motifs on Chinese porcelain.
