CHINESE TERRACOTTA CAMEL WITH SOGDIAN RIDER - TL TESTED. Tang Dynasty, Ca. AD 618 - 907. A terracotta figure depicting a Sogdian merchant riding a camel. The camel, with its head reared high and mouth open in mid-bray, stands firmly on all fours. Seated atop is a Sogdian merchant with a pointed hat and a dynamic pose, captured mid-gesture with one arm raised, dressed in a vibrant tunic. For similar see: The Ashmolean Museum, Accession no. This piece has been precisely dated using a thermoluminescence analysis carried out by Ralf Kotalla. The report will accompany the lot.
