[CHOISY (François-Timoléon de). Journal du voyage de Siam fait en 1685 et 1686. Paris, Sébastien Mabre-Cramoisy, 1687. In-4, brown calf, spine decorated, roulette on the edges, spotted edges (Binding of the period). "A very rare first edition of this curious account" (Chadenat). This diary was written by the Abbé de Choisy during the first official embassy to Siam, in what is now Thailand, led by the Chevalier de Chaumont on the orders of Louis XIV, who hoped to extend Catholic influence into Buddhist territory. The author, the embassy's coadjutor, describes in particular their long ocean crossing via the Cape of Good Hope and Madagascar. Handwritten bookplate to title: Mr Hayet le père. Binding restored, some minor foxing and spotting not serious, one endpaper angularly missing, endpaper removed. Chadenat, n°5038.
