CHRISTIAN GEORG SCHÜTZ the Elder (Flörsheim am Main 1718-1791 Frankfurt am Main) View of the Rhine valley with a view of the town of Braubach and Marksburg Castle. Oil on copper. Signed lower right: SCHÜZ. f. 28.5 × 33 cm. Provenance: - Art dealer Arthur Tooth & Sons, London (label verso). - Auction Koller, Zurich, 26 March 2010, lot 3068. - European private collection. Christian Georg Schütz the Elder learnt the craft of painting at a young age from the fresco and façade painter Hugo Schlegel (1679-1737) before embarking on his travels and working for three years at various princely courts. Schütz specialised in landscape painting after the models of Herman Saftleven (1609-1685) or Jan and Robert Griffier (1645-1718 and 1675-1727). He spent most of his life in Frankfurt, whose surroundings he captured in his works. Various journeys also took the artist to Switzerland and the Rhineland, where he painted this view of the town of Braubach with the Marksburg. The events are depicted in detail in a high-quality manner and testify to his preference for accurate perspective.
