Christian Ludwig Attersee came to Austria as a child in 1944. His father, the architect and builder Christian Ludwig, built the first high-rise in Bratislava in 1936. In 1951, the son began writing short novels, lyrics to songs, drawing comics and designing stage sets. He had to give up his desire to become an opera singer early on due to extensive hearing loss. From 1957, Ludwig studied stage architecture at the Academy of Applied Arts in Vienna. From 1959 to 1963 he studied painting there with Eduard Bäumer. The first picture cycles were created between 1963 and 1965: "Weather Pictures" and "Rainbow Anomalies". In the mid-1960s, Attersee became friends with protagonists of Viennese Actionism. He took part in campaigns by Günter Brus, Hermann Nitsch and Gerhard Rühm. With his first "object inventions" in the area of eroticism and everyday life, he made a name for himself in European Pop Art. The object inventions typical of him, such as the "Speisekugel", "Speiseblau" or the "Atterstecker", were created. In 1965 he moved to Berlin and showed his first exhibition there. From 1966, Ludwig took the stage name Christian Ludwig Attersee, in reference to his time at Attersee. In 1971/72 he was in West Berlin on a DAAD scholarship. Initially close to object and performance art, Attersee tried to develop a new form of total work of art. Later, drawings and panel paintings on sexuality and the experience of nature became characteristic of him, such as the "Children's Room Triptych" from 1971, inspired by a picture book illustration by Fedor Flinzer. Attersee's works are characterised by figural-symbolic style, bright colours and dynamic brushstrokes, often incorporating the frame or text into the image. In 1984 he represented Austria at the Venice Biennale. In 1985 Attersee released his first LP: "Songs of Weather and Love". This was followed in 1986 by the design of Vienna's first champagne ball in the Konzerthaus and in 1987 by a swing ship for André Heller's "Luna Luna Fairground". For the facade of the Attersee House (1986) on Vienna's Mariahilfer Straße, Attersee designed the largest glass mosaic in Europe ("Weather Merchant"), implemented by Elio Macoritto. In 2006, Attersee covered the Vienna Ringturm in foil for six weeks. In 2007, the monumental large interior mosaic "Wealth of the Earth" was completed in the Federal Geological Institute in Vienna. In 1990 Attersee was appointed professor at the master class for experimental design at the University of Applied Arts Vienna. From 1992 to 2009 he led the painting, animated film and tapestry master class. He also taught at the International Summer Academy for Fine Arts in Salzburg.
