Lot no. 2721
Christoph Daniel Schenck (1633 Constance - 1691 ibid.) Circumference
Christ of the Resurrection
Limewood, carved in one piece with the cloud plinth; remnants of the original version. Fully sculpted depiction of a standing Christ with his right leg stretched out in front of him, his right arm raised in a gesture of blessing and looking to the sky to his right; clothed in a wide, long cloth which is draped from the back of the plinth over his loins and left shoulder to the right behind his arm, where it is puffed up by the wind. The sculptor has masterfully reproduced the figure of Christ with anatomical fidelity, whereby the hands and the expressive head of Christ are particularly finely modelled. A glazed relic of St Joachim (labelled "Gioacchino") is embedded in the rectangular, profiled plinth. Schenck was one of the first high baroque sculptors in southern Germany and Switzerland and shaped the history of sculpture in this region. He worked almost exclusively for the Prince-Bishop of Constance and the Prince-Abbot of Einsiedeln, the highest-ranking ecclesiastical patrons in south-west Germany and Switzerland at the time. Total h. 73 cm.
