POLYCHROME MAJOLICA CYLINDER, WORKSHOP OF MASTRO DOMENICO, VENICE, CIRCA 1570 decorated with garland-framed busts in reserve on a plain blue background and trophies; wear and tear from use, series of minor glaze failures with pictorial interventions, some loss of material at the mouth and foot H. cm 36.3, diam. cm 27.5 A VENICE MAIOLICA VASE, CIRCA 1570; WORN AS USUAL, A SERIES OF MINOR RE-PAINTING DUE TO GLAZE LOSSES, SOME MATERIAL LOSSES Our maiolica, as well as being an example of the very high quality of pharmaceutical tableware made in Venice from the second half of the 16th century onwards, is an excellent example of the work of Domenico da Venezia's workshop, and of the influence exerted on the work of the lagoon kilns by the style of Venetian painting. Look for comparison at the albarello with mustard jar decorated with leaves, fruit and medallions framing the heads of a girl and an old man now in the Herzog Anton Ulrich Museum in Brunswick (J. Lessmann, Herzog Anton Ulrich-Museum Braunschweig, Italienische Majolika, Katalog der Sammlung, Braunschweig 1979, no. 782, p. 481) or the exemplar in the Museum for Kunst und Gewerbe (J. Rasmussen, Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe Hamburg, Italienische Majolika, Hamburg 1984, no. 158, 159, 160, pp. 236, 239-242).
