A VENICE MAIOLICA VASE, CIRCA 1570; SOME RESTORATIONS, WORN AS USUAL
On the occasion of a passage on the antiquarian market of our lot, it was pointed out that the small male portrait was found in a cap-bottomed dish in the Bargello Museum, Florence (inv. no. 1932M), assigned to Veneto production in the mid-16th century: the figure of a Dominican saint characterised by the palm of martyrdom has been identified as St. Peter of Verona. Other comparisons have been suggested for this maiolica, of a very sustained quality: to the specimen in the Bayer collection (G. Biscontini Ugolini, I vasi da farmacia della collezione Bayer, sl 1997, card 30, pp. 104-107) to the two large albarellos in the Cora collection at the Museo Internazionale della Ceramica in Faenza (inv. no. 21196 and 21325). But look also at Ravanelli Guidotti in 1998 (C. Ravanelli Guidotti, Omaggio a Venezia. Maioliche veneziane tra manierismo e barocco nelle raccolte del Museo Internazionale delle Ceramiche in Faenza. II, exhibition cat., Faenza 1998, ad vocem).
