In 1882, Franz Roubaud (1856-1928) made his first trip to the Caucasus. He since then often visited subjects from the region, particularly horsemen. In addition, he was inspired by paintings of the Munich painter Theodor Horschelt (1829-1871), who depicted scenes from Caucasian war in the 1850s and 1860s under the reign of Alexander II. Like Horschelt’s works, Roubaud's paintings were based on real impressions, however without taking sides.
The paintings were usually anticipated by numerous studies and sketches from nature.
Condition:
The painting is in good condition with fresh colors and scattered areas of craquelure. Inspection under UV light reveals small areas of retouching throughout the painting, especially in the area of the sky and under the black horse.
The frame shows minor signs of use.
The size of the stretcher is 60 x 83 cm, and the frame measures 82.5 x 106 cm.
Franz Roubaud (1856-1928)
The artist Franz Roubaud was born in Odessa (today’s Ukraine) and moved to Munich in 1877, where he began his studies at the Academy of Arts and took private painting lessons from the battle-painter Josef von Brandt (1841-1915 ). In 1882/84, he was enabled through the support of the Russian Tsar Alexander III to go on a first trip to the Caucasus.
The depiction of Central Asia and mainly the Caucasian areas should then determine most of his horse- and battlefield paintings. Roubaud was appointed professor at the Academy of Arts in Munich in 1891. In addition, he was appointed professor at the Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg in 1903. His works were exhibited at the Munich Glaspalast several times and were also included in the major international art exhibitions in St. Petersburg and Berlin. Roubaud's popularity at the time of the 19th century is justified not only by his outstanding production as an historical and battle painter, but has also been significantly influenced by his well-known patrons, including the Tsars Alexander III and Nicholas II as well as the Prince Regent Luitpold of Bavaria. Among his most famous works is the 100 meter panoramic painting ‘The Siege of Sevastopol’, executed in 1904. (cko)
