The painting is directly related to one of the four pendentives that surround the central dome of the Royal Chapel in the Royal Palace of Madrid.
The painter Corrado Giaquinto designed and supervised the decoration of the aforementioned chapel, and it is his hand that created the frescoes of the central dome ('The Coronation of the Virgin') and its four pendentives ('Saint Hermenegild,' 'Saint Leander,' 'Saint Isidore the Labourer,' and 'Saint Mary of the Head'). He also painted the scene of Saint James in the Battle of Clavijo, which presides over the atrium.
