Hofmaier 237 II B c (from d). – One of 100 copies. - Published by R. Piper & Co., Munich. - The print was created in memory of scenes from Beckmann’s childhood. In his diary, he wrote on 14 September 1945: “At night, the Rokin – the street in Amsterdam where Beckmann lived and worked from 1937 to 1947 – is brightly lit once more, and I thought of myself as a child in Leipzig, looking out with Lixer onto the street illuminated at night.” (quoted from Hofmaier, p. 606).
Drypoint on wove paper. Signed. Spot-mounted to the back of the mat. - Slightly irregular browning; isolated, small, faintly brown stains, slightly seeping through to the reverse; paper very slightly buckled in a few places in the margins; small marginal tears on the right and left (approx. 0.8 mm); an elongated tear in the upper right-hand area of the sheet, professionally closed from the reverse, professional paper repair in the lower left-hand corner; overall in good condition. Superb, finely burred impression with wide margins and deckle edges on two sides. - One of 100 copies. - Published by R. Piper & Co., Munich. - The print is inspired by memories of Beckmann’s childhood. His diary mentions the Rokin in Amsterdam, where he lived and worked from 1937 to 1947, and prompts the artist to reflect on his childhood in Leipzig.
