Classical Modernism Edmund Kesting n.d. (Abstract composition). Circa 1960. Mixed media with watercolour over chalk on firm wove paper. 34.2 x 45.7 cm. Signed. - Minimally wavy due to the technique, the corners slightly bumped, with a short tear in the upper margin, verso somewhat browned and with slight traces of atelier. Very good overall. Moving and expressive composition, the colours extremely fresh and bright. Provenance: Private collection, East Germany. - From the 1960s onwards, Edmund Kesting was drawn to the artists' town of Ahrenshoop. During this time, he created a series of abstract works that poetically reflect the rugged coastal landscape of the Darß. Inspired by the interplay of wind, light and sea, the artist translated nature into rhythmic compositions of line, surface and colour - as a sensual condensation of a landscape that unfolds anew in abstraction.
