Lot no. 323
Classical Modernism Karl Hofer Mask in profile to the left. Circa 1945. India ink and watercolour on chamois-coloured laid paper. 26.5 x 23.6 cm. Monogrammed. Mounted freestanding in mat in dots and framed under glass. - The sheet with only isolated minor handling marks. Overall very good and in colour-fresh condition. The drawing is listed in the unpublished catalogue raisonné of works on paper by Karl Hofer under WVZ. No. 1577. - The present watercolour stands in contrast to Hofer's often melancholy works: with its bright colours and caricature-like exaggeration, it focuses on expressive liveliness and ironic refraction. The free form and playful approach clearly stand out from Hofer's usually restrained pictorial language. At the same time, the work refers to a less recognised group of works from those years, in which Hofer also devoted himself to cheerful subjects such as circus scenes with musicians - an expression of a surprisingly multi-layered artistic attitude in the midst of difficult times.
