Lot no. 250
Claude-François DENECOURT (1788-1875) forester, he traced 160 kilometres of paths in the forest of Fontainebleau. L.A.S. "Denecourt dit le Sylvain de la Forêt de Fontainebleau", 2 March 1859, to Alphonse Duchesne, editor of Le Figaro, 4 1/2 pages in-8. He thanks Duchesne for defending him in the dispute with Champfleury over the paths of Fontainebleau: "Que M. Champfleury, I say, may rant and rave about it all he likes, he is free to do so [...].But when, in order to season his buffoonish diatribe, he mixes in allusions by which he attributes to me a character and feelings that are not very worthy and facts and actions tainted with ignominy such as, for example, when he describes the honest workmen I employed as poachers and scoundrels [...] he turns me into an accused hunted down, pursued and condemned for these misdeeds. " Champfleury also attacks his private life with obvious malice. "You yourself have judged and withered this diatribe as it deserves". And to thank him, the forester offers Duchesne the chance to discover the picturesque sites in the Forest of Fontainebleau that he has made accessible; he asks him to accept "to give you a foretaste of my beloved forest, a copy of the latest edition of my guide"...
