Lot no. 1938
Claude Grosperrin (1936 Charenton - 1977 Paris) "Courses à Deauville". Original title Impression of a late summer horse race watched by a large number of spectators, painted in a luminous colour palette and dynamic style that varies from glazing to impasto. Grosperrin, who trained at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris under Maurice Brianchon and subsequently ran his studio in Montmartre, created this light-flooded work in a stylised, reduced formal language. His works, which depict equestrian themes such as stud farms and horse racing as well as coasts, landscapes, still lifes and urban scenes, quickly became very popular among collectors and connoisseurs. In addition to solo exhibitions in renowned Parisian galleries such as Charpentier, Durand-Ruel and Berthe Weill, his works were also shown internationally, including at the Van der Straten Gallery and the Eric Gallery in New York or at Wildenstein in London, and won prestigious prizes such as the Farman Prize in 1956 and the Casa Velázquez Prize in 1961. Oil on canvas; signed on bottom right; titled on verso. 100 cm x 81 cm. Frame. Oil on canvas. Signed. Inscribed with title on the reverse.
