Claude Lorrain (1600 Charmes - 1682 Rome) Successor of the 17th/18th century; Idealised Italian landscape with a watermill The atmospheric, finely glazed landscape in warm, golden evening light is enlivened in the foreground by resting figures gathered by the pond of the watermill: under a tall tree on the left, a shepherdess with goats and cows, one of which she is milking, and on the right, a rider quenching his horse's thirst. In the centre background behind it is the picturesque watermill with its round tower, flanked by a tree-covered rocky slope. The wide, deep view leads to a mountainous landscape with fanciful, ancient architecture. In several respects, not only the pictorial structure but also the motifs are based on works by Claude Lorrain: the composition and the motif of the watermill are based on a well-known painting by Lorrain from 1631, which is now in the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, Massachusetts, and on an etching by Lorrain from 1634. The artists who modelled themselves on these included the Dutchman Jan Hackaert (1629 to after 1685), as a drawing in the Hamburger Kunsthalle shows (inv.No.: 22006).
