Claude-Marie DUBUFE (Paris, 1790 - La-Celle-Saint-Cloud, 1864) Portrait of Etiennette d'Aligre (1791-1866), Marquise de Pomereu Oil on canvas (Original canvas) Signed 'Dubufe' lower left In its original wood and gilded stucco frame with honeycomb decoration, French work of the Restoration period Portrait of Etiennette d'Aligre (1791-1866), Marchioness of Pomereu, oil on canvas, signed, by C.-M. Dubufe 46.06 x 35.43 in. 117 x 90 cm Provenance: Anonymous sale; Paris, Palais d'Orsay, Me Laurin, 16 June 1977, no. 58 ; Private collection, Picardie Etiennette d'Aligre, heiress to the Marquis d'Aligre's immense fortune and to the Daubeuf estate through her mother, married Michel-Marie de Pomereu in 1810. They divided their time between a hotel in Paris, acquired in 1816 on rue de Lille, and the Château du Héron in the Andelle valley east of Rouen. At the end of the Second Empire, his son Armand de Pomereu d'Aligre inherited Château de Daubeuf in Seine-Maritime. He also owned the château of Baronville in Eure-et-Loir, as well as the Hôtel de Pomereu, which stands on the site of two former town houses built during the reign of Louis XV. The Pomereu family managed to adapt perfectly to the political changes at the end of the Ancien Régime and the beginning of the 19th century. A brilliant portraitist, Claude-Marie Dubufe was the first in a line of painters who worked for a wealthy clientele made up of members of Parisian and French high society. Probably close to Etiennette d'Aligre, he painted another portrait of our model, at an older age, in an interior (current location unknown). We would like to thank Mr Emmanuel Bréon for kindly confirming the authenticity of this painting based on photographs taken on 19 February 2026.
