Pair of busts of a Bacchante and a Bacchus (or Satyr)
Counterparts. Terracotta, engobed dark brown (bronze-coloured). Each signed; marble base. Models c. 1783, probably 19th century execution; vividly rendered with heads slightly turned and tilted in profile; the Bacchante with sensually exposed breasts, fur cloak and vine and grape wreath in her hair, the bust of Bacchus correspondingly designed with a similar cloak and vine wreath. The important French sculptor was a pupil of Jean-Batiste Pigalle and worked under the pseudonym Clodion. Working for the court of King Louis XVI and wealthy private collectors, his main subjects were mythological motifs, fauns, nymphs, satyrs, putti and graceful girls. Minimally dam.; total h. 25.5 cm.
