The illustration includes 3 plates outside the text: a view of the Tour du Temple by Audinet, a plan of its second and third floors, and a facsimile of the Queen's handwriting, signed by Louis XVII, Madame Royale and Madame Élisabeth. The copy is complete with the list of subscribers. Cléry was Louis XVI's valet at the Temple for five months. He organised his memories of this period, which extend to the last hours of the monarch's life, in the form of a diary, with the intention of providing material for those who will write the history of the unfortunate end of Louis XVI (p. 2). Elegant contemporary English binding by Christian Samuel Kalthoeber, a German bookbinder who emigrated to London, where he was a pupil of Baumgarten, whom he succeeded in 1782, with his own label. Handwritten bookplate of K. A. Glenbervie dated 1801 on one endpaper. A copy bearing the arms of the Marquis de Tulle de Villefranche, with an engraved bookplate by Michel. According to a handwritten note on one of the endpapers, it comes from the Château de Villarceaux, in the Val-d'Oise, which belonged to the Tulle de Villefranche family after 1879. Some light spotting and foxing.
