Lot no. 58
CLISSOLD (Frederick). Narrative of an ascent to the summit of Mont-Blanc, August 18th, 1822. With an appendix upon the sensations experienced at great elevations. London, Rivingstones and Cochran, 1823. In-8°, half havana morocco binding with corners, gilt title on spine (Modern binding). Very rare first edition of this account of the fifteenth ascent of Mont Blanc, the first to be published in English since Beaufoy's brief account of the fourth ascent. Some foxing, more pronounced on the last few leaves. Was Fréderick Clissold the brother of the Reverend Auguste Clissold, one of the fathers of homeopathy in England (he translated into English the works of the German scientist Samuel Hahnemann)? It is thought that he died accidentally in Hampstead in 1844 after taking too large a dose of prussic acid. Little is known about him, apart from this ascent of Mont Blanc and his title of nobility (Esquire, the lowest title in the hierarchy of British nobility). Perret, 1021 - Meckly 049 - Neate C82 - Coolidge 101 - Nava C/8
