Bronze temple bell, China, Qing dynasty, Kangxi period, 1701 The attachment at the top in the shape of a two-headed chimera with a scaled body, the decoration consisting of a frieze of stylised lotus petals at the top (with four holes), then four large square cartouches between two rows of bosses (above and below), one of the four containing an inscription with a date "Made on a splendid day in the 3rd month of the 39th year of Kangxi (i.e. 1701), by the superior of the Monastery of the Great Buddha (Dafo si), Weishou", the rim lobed. Misses, dents and holes H. 53 cm approx. See a comparable bell in the Philadelphia Museum of Art (inventory no. 1923-21-494)
