Lot no. 200
Red morocco chest decorated in gold with stylized foliage and palmettes, opening at the top, with a drawer in the lower front, bronze handles and hooks. 18th century H. 42 cm - W. 78 cm - D. 58 cm Small cracks, wear and tears, fleurs-de-lys in the spandrels. Expert : Pierre-François DAYOT, +33 (0)6 30 09 86 10 Made by master bookbinders and sheath-makers in the 18th century, these boxes, in red morocco decorated with gilding, were very popular right up to the end of the Ancien Régime, particularly with the royal family. They were made by renowned craftsmen such as Antoine-Michel Padeloup, the King's ordinary bookbinder, the Riollant brothers, Pierre Vente and Antoine Lanson, bookbinders for the King's Menus Plaisirs. The administration regularly ordered these large armorial cassettes to hold their owners' personal effects while they travelled. These were given to their entourage when they were considered too old. The quality of our work and its decoration of fleurs-de-lys, emblems of the Monarchy, can be compared to the chests commissioned for Louis XV's daughters.
