Lot no. 86
Leather case containing four quadrille game boxes decorated with engraved and tinted mother-of-pearl and decorated with the Comédia Del Arte and children playing. 18th century work signed Mariaval le jeune in Paris (minor wear). The artisan table-maker Mariaval seems to have specialised in making games, as his signature appears on many quadrille game boxes. The inspiration for the decoration came from engravings and characters from the Comedia dell Arte. The engraving of ivory and mother-of-pearl is very precise and perfectly mastered. The collections of the Amsterdam Rijksmuseum include boxes signed Mariaval le Jeune in Rouen. This suggests that, in addition to his Paris workshop, he also had a workshop in Rouen. Height 20 cm - Width: 15 cm
